I just finished watching a very touching movie, The Secret Life of Bee’s. It moved me and reminded me that I am so grateful for the power of stories that touch us at the deepest parts. In my mind this movie is about the story of great loss, a search for the truth and the healing beauty of love that crosses all boundaries. I am sure it is more than that, but those are the themes that stood out for me.
As I ponder the power of this story I am reminded of another story that has far less meaning: The story we are told every day by a culture that lacks the depth to touch us at the deepest parts. Just what do I mean by that? I hope you will keep reading…
Every day we are bombarded by our culture through tv, movies, billboards, magazines, etc… Every one telling us we need to have more, be thinner, drive the right car, drink the right beer, etc… But the reality is that we don’t need any of it! We don’t need to spend our lives trying to keep up…trying to be somebody…trying to have everyone notice.
What we really need is to notice and understand the deeper story going on around us. It is so easy to get caught up in a surface story of looking, acting & playing the part we think everyone wants to see, but the sad truth is that the part we so often try and play is the extra on the set, the B movie actor or actress of no consequence instead of the leading man or woman that we have all been invited to play!
God’s story for our lives surrounds us every day through the people we love, the battles we fight, the ones that we serve and the great victories big and small. This is the story that God has for us and man is it a leading role! It is the story of redemption…loss…love…sacrifice…brokeness….wholeness and many other things. It is the story that God has been writing since the beginning of time and it is our turn now to take center stage! To follow and love Him, to serve and love those around us and to fulfill the amazing script that we have been given for our time on the center screen!
So what are you waiting for?! Accept the challenge, read the script, memorize the lines and dive into life! After all, it was Jesus who said that He had come to give us life…life to the full! Now that sounds like a role that we all would like to play…and we can! Don’t waste another day of your life acting out a poor script when the greatest script of all time awaits your engagement every day of your life!
