Big thanks to Rob Bell & Ron Martoia for getting me to really think about this subject! What can you and I do in 10 seconds or less?
We can make judgements about other people. Ron refers to this in his book, Transformational Architecture, as the Judger Gene. I size people up, come to a conclusion and then accept or reject them based on my limited knowledge of who I think they might be. Sometimes this works for me and many times it does not, because I am just plain wrong!
So why do I judge? What is it about me that so often likes to jump into the judge and jury seat and make snap decisions about others? Well, it all started in the Garden…literally! When Adam and Eve made the choice to eat from the fruit, they were given the knowledge of good and evil. Which literally meant they were given the ability to judge between right and wrong. They, and we, were given a gift that had initially only been intended for God…the right to judge! The only problem with that is, we don’t have the perfection of God, so our judging is off…it doesn’t quite work for us and it is probably more of a curse than a blessing.
James 4:12 is a challenging verse that reminds us that God is the only true judge and wonders out loud, who are we to judge our neighbor? I think that is a great and convicting question for me. Who am I? I think it’s time I lay down the gavel and pick up the towel and leave the judging of others to God and let the serving and acceptance of others begin on my part. What about you?
